Our History

The Fentress County Soil Conservation District was organized June 28, 1955 by mandate of the Soil Conservation District Law of 1939. The District works directly with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to administer an effective conservation program promoting the wise use of the county’s natural resources. This function is fulfilled through educational programs, stewardship, awards programs, and by working closely with area farmers and ranchers.

The District assists with the allocation of Federal and State cost-sharing funds for approved conservation practices. The Fentress County Soil Conservation District works with landowners throughout the year to assist them in protecting and preserving the natural resources of our county while maximizing their use and improving productivity. We are able to accomplish this through grants from the TN Department of Agriculture and funds from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (EQIP and WHIP) programs.

In 2012, approximately $265,000.00 was obligated and spent through these programs. These funds aid landowners in installing many conservation measures, which aid in reducing soil erosion and improving water quality.
